Films & resources

Short films and resources for 10-14 year olds.

Three films and accompanying resources showcase the STEM* applications of the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP). They also illustrate the wide range of careers involved in the expedition.

*science, technology, engineering and maths.

Along with the films, we have created resources with student activities and teacher notes on the following themes:

  1. Discovery: use the film ‘Exploring the past’ and a practical activity to explore and model core sampling.
  2. Careers: meet the team in the film ‘Working at sea’ and learn about their skills, motivations and career pathways.
  3. Solving problems: watch the film ‘Challenges’ to see the team tackle a problem at sea then try a series of practical activities exploring STEM applied to Black Sea MAP.

Our three films are accessed via Vimeo through the links below. You will need a password to watch these films.

Please note these films are available in the UK only.

Over the three years of the expedition, the team were followed by documentary makers. You can see the two-part feature length documentary Ghosts of the Deep: Ancient Shipwrecks from July 8th on Channel 4’s More 4.

Hear directly from one of our STEM Scholars, Lottie, when she appeared on Newsround.

Exploring the past: what was the research team trying to find out? How did they go about it?

Black Sea MAP spent three years studying ancient sea level changes on the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea. The team use data gathered using high tech equipment to build the story of what may have happened to civilisations living in the area around the time of end of the last Ice Age.

Working at sea: follow the ship’s crew and science team for a day onboard the Research Vessel Stril Explorer.

An offshore expedition needs a wide range of people, skills and resources, all working together. This film showcases the roles and the team spirit necessary to live and work together onboard a ship.
